Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

This Australian Reading Hour, encourage your child to discover or rekindle their love of a good book. Take the time to learn, escape and relax on Thursday 19 September and read for one hour.

Get involved at home

Join in at home and read your child a bedtime story. Studies show that reading a bedtime story six days a week can give kids almost a year’s head start when they begin school. Reading has also been shown to develop empathy, promote critical thinking and help children find a sense of self.

Book Week 2019 is coming up and Redhead Public School will be celebrating our favourite books and love of reading with lots of activites and events for our whole community to enjoy. We will be holding a book fair in the library from Monday 19th to Wednesday 21st August where all students and their families can come and browse and/or purchase new and exciting books as well as many other fun novelty items. We have invited Liz Anelli, a talented illustrator to visit our students and share her drawing tips and techniques. We will all be dressing up as a book character for a costume parade on Tuesday 20th August and enjoying a picnic lunch with our families and friends. We will also open our classrooms to share our hard work with our visitors. The fun will continue after school with afternoon tea (provided), the opening of our Master Builder Room and finally, our Initiatives Expo. Please see the flyer for times. Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Do you have a great idea to improve your area?

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Project applications close 15 May 2019.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Last week's Canberra excursion demonstrated what wonderful students we have here at Redhead Public School. With an extremely early start on Tuesday morning we all eagerly boarded the bus ready to begin 3 nights and 4 days of action packed activities. We had an impressively busy itinerary to follow and we received the full cooperation of all our Stage 3 students and what an exciting week to be in the heart of Australia's Government.

With key visits to The Australian War Memorial, Old Parliament House, Parliamentary Education Office, Questacon, Government House, Parliament House, the Art Gallery, the Royal Australian Mint and the SNOW (to name a few) our trip to our Nation's capital was certainly jam packed and complimented our recent studies of Democracy and Australia's level of governance. Thanks to Mr Halbesma, Miss Vaughan and Mrs Kurtz for the excellent planning that made the excursion such an enjoyable experience for everyone. Mrs Church

We are celebrating Book Week from Monday 13th- Wednesday 15th August (the week before the official CBCA Book Week due to Stage 3 Canberra excursion). A book fair will be hosted in the library before and after school (8.30-9.10am and 3.10-3.50pm). We will be visited by Kate and Jol Temple, two very talented children's authors on Monday 13th and all students are invited to attend a session. The cost for the visit is $5 per student. A poster design competition will be held and the winning poster will be displayed around the school to advertise our book fair. The winning designer will receive a voucher to spend at the fair. Dymocks Book Bonus

This year our school is participating in Dymocks Children's Charities 2017 Book Bonus, an optional online read-a-thon linked to the NSW Premier's Reading Challenge.

Book Bonus offers an opportunity to encourage our students to read books for the Challenge while raising funds to help resource the school with high quality books.

Our school will receive books to 100% of the value of funds raised by our students and we'll also be helping schools in need across NSW. 50% of all funds raised will be used to provide books to schools in Dymocks Children's Charities literacy support programs.

Note also, there are prizes for the students' participation with each child raising over $200 receiving a book of their choice (valued up to $20) and prizes for the top fundraisers in the state.

Changes to Payments Made to the School

Redhead Public School will transition to the new NSW public schools' finance system and a new bank account on 14 June 2016.

To ensure a smooth transition, there will be changes to the way we accept parent or carer payments.

Cash, cheque and online payments: Between 8 June 2016 and 15 June 2016, we will not be able to accept payments by cash, cheque or online as we prepare to close our current bank account and transition to the new one. Please ensure that you have made any outstanding payments before 8 June 2016.

From 14 June 2016, online payments will be accepted as before and from 15 June 2016 cash and cheque payments will be accepted as before.

We thank you for your patience and understanding as we transition to our new finance system. If you have any further questions, please contact the administration staff.

The role that parents play in the education of their child has the potential to strengthen the support provided by schools in improving their educational outcomes. NAPLAN is a vital tool to see if children are meeting essential standards

Simply put, NAPLAN is a vital tool for parents, educators and the public to see if Australia's children are meeting essential literacy and numeracy standards.

Taking NAPLAN requires less than four hours over three days, four times during a student's time at school. It is a point-in-time snapshot assessment of a student's achievements in the important areas of literacy and numeracy. And from that small investment comes a wealth of student, school and national information. Literacy and numeracy tests have been undertaken in schools throughout the country for decades. NAPLAN complements these tests and adds a valuable national dimension.

There's a lot that goes into a student's education and I know there's more to school than literacy and numeracy. NAPLAN doesn't test everything happening in the classroom or a school and isn't designed to assess a student's diverse and creative learning, entrepreneurial skills or risk-taking ability. However, it is focused on the critically important skills of literacy and numeracy, and NAPLAN data provides a wealth of information for teachers, schools, parents and carers and students. Why wouldn't adults want to know about their child or student's abilities in literacy and numeracy compared with their peers and, if necessary, seek assistance for their child or student as early as possible?

NAPLAN is also about providing information to the general community. As a caring society, we should all want our children to master and understand literacy and numeracy concepts and know how our future adults are tracking. As the chief executive of ACARA, I am genuine about wanting a strong foundation in literacy and numeracy for every young Australian – so that they are well placed to become productive and fulfilled members of society.

Not knowing this type of information doesn't benefit anyone. Denying access to such important information doesn't help students and it doesn't work for the community.

If students, either individually or sub-groups, can't read, write or understand numbers to a minimum standard, this has negative impacts right through their life. Ignorance of a student's abilities, strong or weak, in literacy and numeracy cannot be considered appropriate policy or strategy. NAPLAN allows us to know at important developmental stages areas of strength and development needs. Where intervention is needed, this can be sought as early as possible. And the more quality information we get on our students' literacy and numeracy abilities during the years, the better quality our response can be.

The idea of abandoning a test that provides us with nationally comparable data on a student's abilities in literacy and numeracy, and which we know benefits students, is an irresponsible proposition. As a country, we would then have no high-quality, nationally comparable literacy and numeracy data about our students' learning and no way of tracking trends in how students are improving across their schooling.

I'm never happy to learn about students who may find NAPLAN distressing, but it's the adults in our students' lives who need to keep NAPLAN in context and work with young people to help them manage this and other "tests" that they will face. I have always maintained that while some familiarisation of NAPLAN and its style of testing in the weeks leading up to NAPLAN is important, I do not agree with buying NAPLAN books, or with excessive coaching or drilling, or diverting a student's attention for weeks on end to NAPLAN. I believe that teaching the English and mathematics curriculum, along with the other subject areas in our broad, rich curriculum, is the best preparation for NAPLAN.

I know that the vast majority of teachers approach NAPLAN in the right way. They keep it in perspective, knowing that it is a snapshot in time of a student's abilities in literacy and numeracy and that it helps us to know as early as possible if that level is not going to serve them well as they progress through their schooling life.

Students should approach NAPLAN as they do any in-school assessment and try their best. There are no prizes for doing well in NAPLAN and no repercussions, other than support and assistance, for those who don't meet the minimum standards.

Parents and carers – before you listen to people proposing you boycott NAPLAN, I have one suggestion for something that you might do. Have a look at the sample NAPLAN questions that are freely available on the ACARA website.

I encourage you to sit down with your child and work through these questions with them. As you do this, please, ask yourself – what part of what you're seeing there do you not want your child learning or knowing about, and crucially, what part do you not want to know about if your child needs assistance in developing their literacy and numeracy skills? When it comes to your child's education, ignorance is not bliss.

Swimming Carnival

Due to rain predictions, our swimming carnival will go ahead with essential events only. These events will be for the strong swimmers within our school. It is encouraged that non-swimmers and weak swimmers stay at school, out of the inclement weather.

Charlestown Pool does have undercover seating but students are advised to bring rain coats, warm clothing and a towel to sit on.

Kidsmatter Launch - A great success!

Our whole school community was involved in the launch of our school as a Kidsmatter School. Students participated in a range of activities that provided a range of skills to assist them with positive mental health.

Kidsmatter Launch Friday 23 October

Kids matter at Redhead Public School

On the 23^rd of October Redhead Public School will be holding a whole school event to celebrate mental health month. The school is launching Kidsmatter, a school-wide approach to children's mental health and wellbeing for primary schools.

A day of activities has been organised to help students develop strategies for their mental wellbeing. The day will involve the community coming together to support one another. A local artist will help students create a mural, a local choreographer has created a dance routine, the local men's shed will be cooking the community a barbeque lunch and much more.

"At Redhead Public School we focus on each child in a holistic manner. We have already been embracing many strategies for children's mental wellbeing. Kidsmatter is the next step in developing the mental health of our students," Ms Jo Clews, Principal of the school, said.

Kidsmatter is a whole school approach to children's mental health and wellbeing for primary schools. It provides proven methods, tools and support to help schools, parents, carers and the wider community nurture happy, balanced kids.

It is a national initiative that aims to improve student mental health and wellbeing, reduce mental health difficulties and increase support for students experiencing mental health issues. Developed by beyondblue, in collaboration with the Australian Psychological Society (APS) and Principals Australia (PA) a two-year independent evaluation of the pilot program, conducted by the Centre for Analysis of Educational Futures at Flinders University, found that 20% of students experiencing mental health difficulties were shown to no longer be at risk after adopting the KidsMatter Primary program over a two-year period.

It was great to see all of our students and staff happy to have our first learning day for Term 2 this morning.

Thank you to our school community for their understanding with the changes that we have had to make as a result of damage due to the recent storms.

For most of our students they are in their regular class groups and class rooms.

The following changes have been made due to four learning spaces being not available due to water damage.

Sigma and Omega are in the library

Year 6 are in the technology centre

Year 5 are in Lambda

Year 4 are in Theta.

Students from Alpha have been reallocated. Students in Year 2 are in either Kappa or Epsilon and Year 3 are either in Gamma or Delta. This afternoon, I will be in the assembly area to assist parents or caregivers with the location of Year 2 and Year 3 Alpha students.

The laneway gate will remain closed until the trees have been removed and the area is safe.

There is a tree on the covered area near Iota and the bubblers. It has now been fenced off. We will open that gate this afternoon. Access for Lambda and Phi is down the pathway from our Administration block.

The garden near Phi and Iota is out bounds for everyone.

To assist with the safety of all who are on our school grounds, please ensure that you are wearing shoes and that non school aged children are under very close supervision from an adult.

This is a new opportunity for all of the schools in our Whitebridge community.

On Monday 23 March students from the Whitebridge Community of Schools will have the opportunity to join a dance ensemble. There will be two groups if there is enough interest – a junior group Year 1, 2, and 3 or a senior group Year 4, 5 and 6.

This ceremony celebrates the learning achievements of our students as well we will induct our school leaders for 2015 into their positions.

Year 6 students will receive their Graduation Certificates.

The first row of seats is reserved for the parents of our Councillors for 2015. There will not be any other reserved seating.

Please assist by seating younger people on laps and leaving all prams outside.

Our office will be shut during our ceremony – all staff attend this important celebration.

There will not be any access by guests until at least 9.15 – after the setting up has been completed.

Guest access through the side doors will commence after all of our students have been seated.

NSW Police Force has released information about three children being approached in Cowlishaw Street on Saturday. They are appealing for public assistance.

About 10.45am (Saturday 16 August 2014), an 11-year-old boy was waiting for friends outside a supermarket on Cowlishaw Street, Redhead, when a man allegedly approached him.

The man offered the boy lollies, allegedly urging him to get inside a white, early model hatchback parked nearby.

Full details are included in the attachment.

Meanwhile, the incident has again prompted police to encourage parents to discuss the ‘Safe People, Safe Places' messages with their children, including;

Make sure your parents or another adult you know knows where you are at all times.
Always walk straight home or to the place you are walking to. Walk near busier roads and streets, or use paths where there are lots of other people.
Know where safe places are – a shop, service station, police station, library or school.
If you are ever frightened, you should go to one of these places and ask them to call the police.
Learn about safe adults you can look for and talk to if you need help – police officers, teachers at school, adults you know and trust.
Don't talk to people you don't know and never get into a car with someone you don't know. If a car stops on the side of the road and you don't know the person inside, do not stop.
If you are scared and can use a phone, call 000 and tell them you are scared.
If someone tries to grab you, yell out, ‘Go away, I don't know you'. This lets other people know you have been approached by someone you don't know.

Out of uniform day

Friday 22 August we will be having an out of uniform day. Students are asked to wear their bushwalking/hiking clothes and donate a gold coin to support the Oxfam charity. Redhead Public School has a very busy time ahead over the next few weeks.

NAPLAN begins on Tuesday 13 May and continues until Thursday 15 May. It is important for students to have a good breakfast and to make sure they have had plenty of sleep and enough water to drink.
Star Struck rehearsals and costume making is in full swing. Many students are excited about attending the matinee performance Friday 13 June.
The disco for student K-6 is on Wednesday 21 May.
Stage 2 camp at Glenrock is on Thursday 22 May and Friday 23 May. It sounds very interesting and the students will have an opportunity to work with the staff from Awabakal Field Centre.
Law Week Activities will be held at Belmont Court House Thursday 22 May and we have a Stage 3 team representing our school.
The Life Education Van is coming to our school Tuesday 27 May until Friday 30 May. All students will attend lessons in the van.
Most students are working on public speaking and are preparing their speeches to deliver to their peers.

Wecome to Redhead Public School. We look forward to seeing all of our Year 1 to Year 6 students when they return to school on Wednesday 29/01/14.

Kindergarten students begin on Monday 03/02/14 but have been allocated an individual Best Start appointment the week prior. If you are unable to attend your appointment, please email the school as soon as possible to arrange an alternative.

Our school hours are 9:10 am until 3:10 pm.

Our uniform shop will be open on staff development day - Tuesday 28th January, 2014 from 9:00 am - 11:00 am. The uniform shop is open on Wednesday mornings before school begins. You can contact Angela McLennan on 0408761762 if you are unable to attend the uniform shop at these times.

At our school assembly last Friday, our school community recognised and thanked the Fire Brigade and the Police for their fantastic efforts during the recent bushfires.

Our Student Representative Council members designed and planned the assembly recognition.

Every student in our school created a "hand" and wrote a thank you message. These were then placed in bags which were presented to firebrigade and the police representatives.

Thank you to all our families for their support yesterday. Currently the Fire Brigade are undergoing a fire hazard reduction exercise. This is creating some smoke, but the wind is blowing it away from school. All students are safe and we are fully operational. Parents are able to come and take home their child or children if they want to.

If the situation changes we will move all of our students to our hall.

Our canteen, Sandy Shores Cafe, is trialling the use of an online canteen ordering system in term 4. The company we are working with is called Our Online Canteen and they offer an easier way for our school canteen and parents to better manage the lunch ordering system.

Visit www.ouronlinecanteen.com.au to register and start placing both recess and lunch orders. Registration is free and credit can be placed onto your account using credit card, direct deposit or PayPal. Orders can be placed two weeks in advance. There is a cut-off time of 8.00 am on the day the order is required to allow time for them to be printed.

Sandy Shores Cafe's full menu is available online and will be updated with exciting, new products and specials as they become available.

A former student of Redhead Public School and gold medal Olympian Angie Bainbridge is working for the AFP (Australian Federal Police) Cyber Crime Prevention Team.
This team aims to create awareness for the issues revolving around cyber bullying, internet safety, identity, reputation, social media management, sexting, online grooming etc. focusing on the issues which are faced by children today with the ever growing technology.

Angie will be delivering a presentation to our Year 5 and Year 6 students on Thursday 16 May.

At 4.00 pm she will present a program which is called ThinkUKnow which is a presentation for teachers, parents and carers. It is an informative presentation including "take home" resources to refer to.

Smart Moves for Parents

Smart moves (docx 20 KB)Redhead Public School staff are trained in the use of smart moves (brain gym) to enhance the learning of students. Course presenter, Christine Love, has offered to run a course specifically for parents to assist their children.

The course will be offered on Tuesday 4 June and Tuesday 11 June from 6.30 - 8.30 pm in our library. The total cost for the two sessions, book and CD is only $20.

ANZAC Writing Competition Year 5

The Redhead Memorial Committee have released the topic for this year's writing competition for Year 5. It is "The Australian Victoria Cross."

Students will be able to research as home, talk to people and discover information to bring to school to write their essay.

The competition commences on Friday 8 March and entries will be collected at 3.10 on Friday 22nd March.

The soldier whose name will be on the trophy this year is Flight Lieutenant L. T. Kay who was an Air Force Pilot in WWII.

The winner will be announced before our school's ANZAC Day on Thursday 11 April.

Presentation Day

It was great to celebrate our year of learning at our Presentation Day celebrations in our Centenary Hall last Thursday. I was extremely proud of our students, our performers and our councillors. Thank you to all of our staff – you are outstanding professionals and our school community appreciate your care and expertise for all of the students at Redhead Public School.

It was a pleasure to present Mrs Rhonda Bowd with a prestigious certificate acknowledging her 30 years of valuable contribution to education of students in NSW. Mrs Bowd is highly respected by all and we are privileged to have her as a member of our staff.

Girls Touch Footy Team

The girl's PSSA touch side have progressed to the next round, winning a tight game against Thornton during the last week of term. The girls kept the other side try-less yet again, winning 2-0. This means they are the winner of their Pool and will face Pool 2 winners, Forster. They will make the trip there and will be playing it out on Thursday 11 October.

A huge congratulations to the girls and everyone involved for getting this far!

Canberra Excursion Monday 27 – Thursday 30 August

The final notes have been given (copies are on our school webpage), warm clothing is being sorted and last minute preparations are well under way for this major excursion for our stage 3 students.

Four exciting days of visiting the best that Canberra has. It is important that for this excursion, as any excursion, that if your child is unwell to keep them at home.

Everyone needs to be at school by 6.15 a.m ready to board the coach.

For the return trip we plan to be back by 6.30 pm. If there is a change, check our school webpage, or if you were at the information night, Mrs Michele O'Loughlan has your mobile and she will text you.

This year there are four teachers attending, Mrs Jan Audet, Mr Shane Bransdon, Ms Jo Clews and Mr Evan Finlay.

And on Monday 30 July at 1.40 we may find we have a few more.

The sports that our athletes will be participating in include: boxing, equestrian (please lend us a hobby horse), rowing, shooting (water pistols), synchronised swimming, weightlifting, shotput and javelin, hammer throw and discus.

The Olympics will begin with a march past of the 29 countries who are participating (our students in their peer support groups), opening ceremony, raising the Olympic flag and the athletes oath, lighting of the cauldron, events and closing ceremony.

Peter Scott will be attending our Olympic Day and assisting with the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

Students are asked to wear their sports uniform.

Redhead Public School will be non-operational on Wednesday 27 June 2012. All teaching staff at Redhead Public School will be participating in this full day industrial action and, as a result, classes WILL NOT operate on this day.

Starstruck Performers at Assembly 22 June

Star Struck is next week. This is the very first time that Redhead Public School has participated.

Thank you to Mrs Clare Smith (dance) and Mr Shane Bransdon (drama) who have trained our two groups to a very high standard. A special thank you to all of the people who assisted with the creation of the costumes - It was a mammoth task and your efforts are truly appreciated.

We have a team of 16 dancers and 15 drama performers.

The enthusiasm and energy of your students, the commitment of your teachers and support of your school communities is what makes Star Struck happen.

Our school is participating in the arena performance 'Star Struck: Time Machine.' We would like to support the 32 students who were selected for dance or drama by taking our years 3 to 6 students on an excursion to watch the morning performance at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre on Friday June 15.

This excursion is optional for our years 3 - 6 students.

The cost of the excursion will be $36 each (includes show ticket and bus fare)

All teaching staff at Redhead Public School will attend this meeting and the school will not be operational on this morning.

Public Speaking Competion

This year students will prepare their public speaking at home for homework during week 4 and 5.

In their class groups they will present their speeches during week 6 and 7.

Three students from each class will be selected to share their speeches to the school during week 9 of this term.

Two students from each stage will be selected to represent Redhead Public School at the Zone Public Speaking Competition. This competition will be early in term 3.

What I Believe is the Spirit of ANZAC by Jakob Cresnar

Cobber, digger, Fair dinkum, True blue, mateship, words so uniquely Australian they had their origin in the trenches of Gallipoli on the 25^th of April 1915.

They were not made to join the campaign, they all volunteered to show how brave and strong they were in battle. They had come to help their country, Australia, in the war against Turkey. They had come to be involved in all the excitement to travel and be with their mates. Not many did realise the hardship and suffering that came ahead, for they had landed in the wrong spot. The Turkish army were ready for them.

2,000 ANZAC's would die by the first day on the beaches of Gallipoli, more than 6,500 would be killed or injured by the end of the week. Eight long months of fighting against the Turks would follow. Some 10,000 ANZAC's would not return home to their love ones.

For example, the courage of a stretcher bearer named Simpson, who dodged bullets and bombs having to carry wounded people back to the trenches who finally lost his life on the beach of ANZAC cove.

The spirit of ANZAC represents courage, sacrifice, mateship and compassion. It's not only about families and friends gathering together to honour and remember our local fighting men and women, but it is also to appreciate and value the quality of life we have today.

The spirit lives everywhere! In schools, on sporting fields and everywhere in Australia and New Zealand. At school we are learning about the five foundations in the "You Can Do It Program." I believe these reflect the spirit of ANZAC, for example

Persistence – on the battle field

Resilience – never giving up

Confidence – doing it for the army

Organisation – being prepared

Getting Along – helping others, MATESHIP

It all began on the shores of Gallipoli in Turkey. The spirit of ANZAC continues in all times of hardship, for example cyclones, floods and bush fires. Australians come to rescue one and other, to ease suffering, to provide food, water and shelter and let them know they are not alone.

The programs address many of the components and objectives within the NSW PDHPE curriculum

Redhead Community Garden - Growing in our School

At our P & C meeting on Monday night, Mr Mark Thomas, on behalf of the Redhead Community Garden group shared their design for the community garden which is going to be established within our school grounds between our Beach Road and K rooms. The design is open for consultation. Key aspects of the design include:

The overriding element of the garden is that it is a place for like minded people to come together and share, nurture and enjoy the fruits of their labour.

· Inspiration for the layout is based on the Nautilus shell, with 2 path systems essentially spiralling back on themselves. (The Nautilus shell is an example within nature of mathematical formula being expressed in an organic form. It is hypothesised that the shell has dimensions that are intrinsic with the Fibonacci Sequence and the Golden ratio. There is a fair amount of cyberspace discussion if you care to discover more about this relationship.)

· The path system allows for free movement through the space whilst providing a high ratio of edges for planting – this actually increases productive space.

· Central to the garden is the pizza oven under a grape/kiwi fruit arbour with raised beds that double as seating. This area will provide welcome shade and a space to meet.

· At the centre of the other spiral is another seat with what will be a ‘village meeting tree', similar in purpose as the Banyan trees – again as a space to sit and share.

· At the junction of the 2 spirals is a ‘Message Arbour' where signage can be placed and principles of the garden outlined.

· The common wish is for plantings throughout to be productive and organically grown (to the best of abilities)

· There is an area for composting to be undertaken in a 3 bin system which will be backed and screened from the common path by another trellis arrangement for passionfruit and/or other vines.

· Water tanks will be included, plumbed from the roof where indicated.

· There is provision for seed raising, propagation and growing on with seed beds and a shadehouse. This will assist with the long term sustainability of the area.

· Provision for tool storage has been provided near the bins and against the brick walls of the classroom. The windows and the air conditioners are to be left open and free.

· Screening and sheltering the southern boundary is a planting of possibly tree lucerne or similar which can be grown and cut regularly to supplement mulch for the beds. Additionally green crops will be grown to supplement organic matter.

· Pathways initially will be probably forest mulch or similar.

· An area for experimental horticulture (such as aquaculture) has been included to provide for individuals' interests.

Anzac Day - A New Tradition

The Redhead War Memorial and Projects Committee have an exciting new initiative which involves our Year 5 students connecting with the history of the veterans who are listed on our War Memorial. 2012 is the commencement of a tradition which will continue for the next 68 years.

Each year, Year 5 students will be presented with a topic relating to ANZAC day to write about. This year the topic is 'What I believe is the spirit of ANZAC'. The piece of writing is to be completed at school, up to 450 words, but the discussion, research and gathering of ideas can be done outside of school time. Closing date is 23 March.

A perpetual trophy, which is an exact replica of the Redhead Memorial, has been created and will be on display in our Centenary Hall. Each year, the name of a veteran will be drawn out and the child who's piece of writing is selected as best addressing the topic will be engraved on a plaque along with the veteran's name and the year.

The veteran for 2012 is Joseph Redvers Grimwood who was a machine Gunner in World War II. He was affectionately know as 'Reddy" around Redhead.

TALKING TO KIDS ABOUT SEVERE NATURAL DISASTERS

The recent natural disasters in Australian and now the earthquake in Christchurch New Zealand mean that young eyes may view some disturbing images. This can be scary for young people.

Young children often have trouble processing information that they see and hear via the media – so exposure may need to be limited or at least vetted. The repetition of images and news stories can distort reality for kids and can be emotionally draining.

Everything is here and now for young children. One tragedy an become many many tragedies as it repeated on the news time and time again.

· Talk about the events, but don't dwell on it.

· Take your cue from your kids – you know them best and this will help you know them better.

· Let them know that it is OK to be sad.

Kids generally move on quickly – but be sensitive to the fact that it may affect them just a little and may show through night fears or bad dreams.

I hope that these ideas may be of assistance at this time.

It is an exciting time as we prepare for the commencement of another exciting year of learning at Redhead Public School.

Staff return on Friday 28th February. On this date prospective new enrolments may visit and make an application to enrol.

On Monday 31st January students in Year 1 - Year 6 will return. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday we will see our Kindergarten students for 2011 when they come for their Best Start visit. All Kindergarten students will commence on Thursday 3rd February.
